On Friday, December 5, 2008, I retired from the University of Utah. I worked in various departments on campus for over 32 years. My first job was in the Park building located on Presidents circle. I started as a park time transcript clerk while attending school at the U. My Dad was on the faculty at the U so I would get a ride from him everyday. I had only been working for about 3 months when my boss Ron Patterson approached me and offered me a full time position. It was an opportunity to enter all the student files into a new database system. This was an exciting time for the Registrars office because it was the first time student records would be electronic. This was my first "full time" position and it continued from there. I worked in various positions in the Registrars office with the last one as Supervisor of Registration. A few months after we moved into a the new student services building, I was offered a position as Graduate Advisor with the Business School. I was so excited for this new opportunity. My boss was Joyce Thorson who is now in her 80's. I continue to stay in touch with her. Professor Cal Boardman was the Dean at the time and continues to work at the David Eccles School of Business. I worked as Graduate Advisor for twelve years and was promoted as Assistant Director of the Masters Programs office. I advised over 100,000 students during my tenure in the Masters Office.
I left the Business School in December of 2003 and took a position as Manager of Academic Affairs at the College of Nursing. I left that position in October 2004 and returned to the Business School as the Director of Executive Education & Corporate Programs.
I worked in that department for four years and started Open Enrollment and Corporate Custom programs for the Business School. I have a lot of wonderful memories working at the University of Utah. While working at the U, I dated and married Randy, had three children, received my bachelors degree, met many amazing people including my best friends. There are many things I will miss about working at the University of Utah .....especially the drive and lunch outings with my best friend Carrie. However, the season in my life has turned and it's time for a new journey. I have my heart fixed on teaching elementary school. I have an opportunity to try it out for eight weeks in February. I will be substituting for a teacher at Altra Elementary while she has her first baby. In the meantime, I have been getting ready for Christmas! I don't know how I every had time to work!!!
